On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
