Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
